The High Priestess

I haven't been completely open with my friends and extended family about my work with Tarot; I can feel their judgement and disdain just by thinking about that conversation. "You're dabbling in things that are evil! You don't know what you will unleash!" And with that, I just have to sigh and move on, as they truly don't understand what Tarot is about.

Tarot, for me, has been a journey of spiritual growth and personal acceptance where I found neither in my traditional Mormon heritage, particularly as I'm a gay male in a long-term committed marriage. And to me, The High Priestess is a personal card that speaks to me of spiritual development and growth-over-time. I am not anti-Christian, but my mind has been opened to something beyond the confines of biblical teachings. (And if you haven't ever checked out Tarot for yourself, it's a worthwhile journey, for sure!)

Message of the Day: Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or Yule, the season of the Winter Solstice is painted (at least in North America) with colors of Santa, fir trees, snowmen, and nativity scenes. There is always someone to remind us to "Keep Christ in Christmas," regardless if we are practicing Christians. But as the weather cools, and the nights go quiet, it's a beautiful time for us to reflect on our personal spirituality that goes beyond the confines of church and religion.

So many of us get so wrapped up in the stress and anxiety of the holidays that we lose sight of the personal meaning it can have for each of us. Being alone, still, connecting to our sense of self and our personal higher power; feeling the intuition that comes with that connection as a guiding force; stepping back to look at the bigger picture of our lives and seeing clearly what is important and what can fall by the wayside; this is what the Winter Solstice and The High Priestess invite us to do: to take a moment for ourselves and reflect on what's important.

Homework: Find some time this season to really connect with yourself. Find some alone time, free from kids and the world, and just be with yourself. Pray, meditate, sing, connect with your higher self. Be present and see how much more at peace you feel going forward.
