The Fool

As you may know, yesterday was the Winter Solstice - the period of time in the year that is marked as having the least amount of daylight (thus, the longest night). During the Winter Solstice, the veil is even thinner than on Samhain (Halloween). Historically, the pagan Scandinavian people would celebrate Yule, a 12-day holiday that included many icons to ward off evil spirits (such as evergreen trees and wreaths, mistletoe, and yule logs) that have since been appropriated into our own Christmas celebrations. Yule was also a time to commune with the spirits, seeking guidance for the year to come.

I think it's really awesome that today's card is The Fool. Traditionally, The Fool represents a new beginning or a new adventure. It's highly positive and has that carefree, risk-averse, teenage attitude that slightly terrifies me. It's the perfect card for the start of a new season.

Message of the Day: I've never been big on New Year's Resolutions. Partly because I'm pretty lazy but also because I would tend to make resolutions that were unrealistic or very difficult to achieve (I'm sure we've all been there). Come early February, that resolution is all but forgotten as I've moved on to other things that fill my time.

But as I'm getting older, I certainly find myself being more aware and taking the time to think on things - weighing priorities, responsibilities, and desires. Tarot, obviously, has been a huge piece in that. To me, The Fool is an invitation to start something new, effect change in your life. And sometimes, as it is with Tarot, we need to adjust the resolution to be more in line with what is achievable. For example, perhaps it's not "I want to lose 30 lbs. by June." Maybe we turn that into a behavior instead of an outcome: "I want to reduce the amount of refined sugars and processed foods I'm eating." Sometimes the attainment of our goals just needs an adjustment in perspective.

Sometimes we need to also remind ourselves that The Fool's Journey is not a happy-go-lucky fairy tale of adventure and bliss, but a journey full of ups and downs, victories and losses. We should be inspired by The Fool's drive and ambition to move forward, but remember to do so in a healthy way that isn't going to march your ass right off that cliff.
