Playing The Fool

As I embark on this project, I'll start from the beginning of the Tarot deck and work my way through it. The goal is to empower you to handle challenging situations, gain fresh perspectives, and utilize Tarot as a tool for self-improvement. I believe in the power of daily Tarot study, often pulling a single card to focus on a specific theme throughout the day. When difficult situations arise, drawing cards can help you reflect and regain your center. Whether it's through daily pulls or during challenging moments, the primary objective is to enhance self-awareness and establish a psychological connection (rather than seeking to predict the future!)

"You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance." - Franklin P. Adams

The first Tarot card, The Fool, marked by the number 0, embodies both everything and nothing simultaneously. It can fall anywhere in the Major Arcana. Their journey, known as The Fool's Journey, represents progression through the Tarot towards enlightenment and self-fulfillment. We each mirror The Fool as we navigate life, gather lessons, evolve, and strive to become our best selves.

About The Fool

The Fool, when drawn in a Tarot reading, traditionally symbolizes new beginnings, spontaneity, and a fresh start on life's journey. It embodies qualities of innocence and trust, encouraging individuals to take calculated risks, embrace the unknown with optimism, and think creatively. This card suggests a sense of freedom, independence, and living in the present moment while fostering an open-hearted and positive outlook. The Fool represents the potential for personal growth and self-discovery, emphasizing that one might approach life's uncertainties as an adventure and place faith in the unfolding journey.

The Fool in Modern Decks

There are thousands of different representations of The High Priestess in Tarot. Below are a few examples of The High Priestess from various decks and art that show the variety and vastness of creative freedom within the Tarot community.

Symbolism in The Fool

While the illustration of The Fool may vary from deck-to-deck, many decks choose to include the symbolism used in Pamela Coleman Smith's original designs. These symbols can help provide reminders and insight into possible interpretations of The Fool, but can also be seen throughout the rest of the Tarot deck in different forms and combinations. Understanding the basic symbolism will help you feel the intention and energy of each card as you go through a reading.

There are infinite resources online for Tarot symbolism. The list below is a collection of my own findings and explanations.

The Fool

The central figure of The Fool card is a young person standing on the edge of a cliff or a precipice. They are often depicted as carefree, dressed in colorful and eccentric clothing. The Fool represents the protagonist of the Tarot journey, embarking on a new adventure or spiritual quest. They symbolize innocence, spontaneity, and a willingness to take risks.

In parenting, The Fool can represent the parents themselves who are embarking on the journey of raising a child. They symbolize the innocence and willingness to take risks that parents often need to navigate the challenges of parenting.

The Cliff

The Fool stands at the edge of a cliff, about to step off into the unknown. This cliff symbolizes the threshold between the conscious and the subconscious, the known and the unknown. It represents a leap of faith or a significant transition in life.

The cliff can symbolize the moment parents step into the unknown territory of parenthood, with the conscious life they knew before giving way to the subconscious, new life with a child. It represents the leap of faith and significant life transition that becoming a parent entails.

The White Rose

In his hand, The Fool holds a white rose. This white rose represents purity, innocence, and the potential for new beginnings. It signifies the untainted spirit of The Fool as they begin their journey.

The white rose can represent the purity and innocence of a child, signifying the potential for new beginnings and the untainted spirit of a child as they begin their life's journey.

The Small Bag

The Fool carries a small, seemingly insignificant bag or satchel on what could be perceived as one of the Wands as is depicted in the traditional suit of Wands. This bag contains their experiences, knowledge, and potential. It represents the lessons and tools they have gathered so far in life.

The small bag can represent the knowledge and experiences that parents carry with them as they raise their children. It includes the lessons, tools, and wisdom they've gathered from their own lives, which they pass on to their children.

The Dog

A loyal and faithful dog accompanies The Fool on their journey. The dog is a symbol of protection, loyalty, and instinct. It suggests that The Fool is guided by their inner instincts and that they are not alone on their path.

The loyal and faithful dog can symbolize the supportive and protective role of parents in a child's life. Parents often guide their children, offering protection, loyalty, and guidance as they grow.

The Sun

The sun represents illumination, enlightenment, and the source of life energy. It signifies the potential for growth and realization as The Fool begins their journey. As the sun is portrayed behind The Fool, it also signifies that not everything will be made immediately clear, and that trust and faith are key parts of their journey.

The sun can represent the enlightenment and illumination that parents strive to provide to their children. It signifies the potential for growth and realization as children begin their life's journey, with the understanding that not everything will be immediately clear, and trust and faith in the parenting process are essential.

The Mountains

In the distance, you can see towering mountains. These mountains symbolize challenges and obstacles that The Fool may encounter on their path. They represent the trials and lessons they will face as they progress.

The mountains can symbolize the challenges and obstacles that parents and children may face together on their journey. These challenges represent the trials and lessons that parents and children encounter and overcome as they progress through life.
